1From the Deep
We keep a market near the engine rooms
Where the crystal light glows blue
Children trading things they've never named
For things they never knew
Our elders tell us what a sun felt like
On a world we've never seen
We were born inside this sailing dark
And the dark is all we've been

From the deep, from the deep
We've been traveling longer than memory keeps
From the deep, from the deep
A city rocking in the starless endless sleep

The light-beings that journey with us
Don't speak the way we speak
More like warmth inside a quiet room
More like finding what you seek
We have fled so many burning worlds
We have lost so many homes
But something in their humming tells us
We are almost not alone

From the deep, from the deep
We've been traveling longer than memory keeps
From the deep, from the deep
A city rocking in the starless endless sleep

Then someone at the porthole called to us
Said come look, come look at this
And the word spread room to room so fast
The whole city stopped to breathe

And below us
Oh, below us
I had never seen such green
Blue and white and burning with a light
That wouldn't ever hurt
That wouldn't ever burn

From the deep, from the deep

Someone said it's beautiful
Someone said we're going in too fast
2Cut Scene of the Crash
This is the part that happens without me
This is the part where I can't move
The sky is on fire and the fire's getting in
And I just have to watch it through

A child's hand in mine
Someone crying, I don't know who
The light-beings screaming
In a color I can't describe

This is the part where I just wait
This is the part that isn't mine
The walls came apart and the fire found us
And the fire was the whole sky

Every face around me sharp and clear
Every crack along the wall
I can see more clearly than I've ever seen before
And I can't do anything at all
I'm frozen, yes I'm frozen, by fear or something more

Then the crash comes and the engines stopped
The first silence of my life
And then a sound I'd never heard
Wind on the outside of a wall

Dust in my mouth
Light on my face
Not crystal light
Not engine light
Something warm and far away

I could hear the children crying
I could hear the metal sing
We'd settled down on the ground
And there was no ground like this
Inside the deep between stars

This is the part where it lets me go
This is the part where I move again
3Blue Goat Demons
They say our ship, crashed up on the hill
Looks like a cathedral
They say we look like something
Crawled up from down below
Blue skin and hooves and horns
Yeah, we look like goat demons
We know how this looks
We know, we know, we know

We're not what you remember
We're not your oldest fear
We fell out of the sky last night
And we're just standing here

Looking for a world that we can call home

The heroes here have got a lot of prior art
For things that look like us
Drawings in the books they keep
Of the ones you shouldn't trust
But we've been on a ship ten thousand years
Running from the ones
Who actually earned those drawings

We're not what you remember
We're not your oldest fear
We fell out of the sky last night
And we're just standing here

We look like blue goat demons
From a cathedral on a hill
You can see it how you want
But we came from the stars
And we're standing very still
Trying not to scare you

We look like blue goat demons
But we'll join your fight to save this world
4Learning the Elements
I put my hand on the ground
Just to feel it
Because I'd never felt solid ground under my hooves before
And something in the ground
Felt me back

Learning the elements of this world
Earth, wind, water, and fire
Powerful, gentle, and calling to me like a choir
(Calling me like a choir)
They're nothing like the Light we carried with us
Through the empty, empty sky
They were here before us
They'll be here when we're gone

The water here moves on its own
Not through pipes, not through walls
It just goes where it goes
And when I stood beside the stream
The water changed direction, chasing after me

Learning the elements of this world
Earth, wind, water, and fire
Powerful, gentle, and calling
Calling me like a choir (like a choir)
Nobody gave me this
Nobody taught me this
The world just opened up its mouth
And I could understand the words

I didn't ask the wind for anything
I was just standing on the hill
But the breezes wrapped around me
Like they had been waiting
Like they had secrets to tell

The fire doesn't frighten me
Not anymore
It sits in my hands
Like it wants to be held

I'm learning the elements of this world
Earth, wind, water, and fire
Learning the elements of this world
Earth, wind, water, and fire
Calling me like a choir (like a choir)

Back on the ship we had the Light
The Light was given to us
But nothing is giving me this
I'm just someone
Who can hear it
5I Don't Need the Lore
There's a queen on a throne
And a king in the ground
And a story on every wall in this town
Everybody's saying sit down, sit down
Let me tell you how it all went down

I don't need the lore
Just show me the door
I've got two good hands
And something's wrong out there
I don't need the lore
Send me on a quest, don't hand me a text

There's a book in every building
And a plaque at every gate
Somebody saved something here
And now something in the hills can't wait
Everybody's saying hold on, hold on
You don't understand what you're walking into

I don't need the lore
Just show me the door
I can see the smoke from here
I'll learn the history later
I don't need the lore
Send me on a quest, don't hand me a text

You can tell me about the king
You can tell me about the queen
But this story's been told a hundred times before
To people just like me
And nothing like me
Maybe someday I'll sit down
And read every word
But right now I can hear somebody calling
And I don't think they need me
To have done the reading first

Send me on a quest, don't hand me a text
I don't need the lore
Just show me the door
I don't need the lore
6Under the Mushroom Caps
They told me this place was strange
They told me watch your step out here
But I walked in under the mushroom caps
And the glow felt like a lullaby
I used to know

Give me the glow
Give me the glow
I was raised on quiet light

The caps above me wide as rooftops
Stems like towers in the dark
The little ones grow in clusters by the water
Pulsing slow like breathing
Like the whole marsh is asleep
And dreaming in color

Give me the glow
Give me the glow
I was raised on quiet light

Spores drifting by like slow ideas
The air itself is soft
The water's warm and shallow
And it hums if you stand still long enough
The mushrooms taller than cathedrals
And I keep thinking
I know this
I've been somewhere like this before

I spent my whole life inside a ship
Where the light came from the walls
And this is the first place
On this whole bright world
That feels like the light I understand

Give me the glow
Give me the glow
I was raised on quiet light
And I finally found it again
7The Grind
Kill enough of these
Collect enough of those
That's the grind
That's the grind
And it gives me direction, as I roam

My bags are full of things
I cannot explain
Teeth and spleens and glowing spores
And somebody's favorite comb
But I keep moving, keep calling
Keep pulling fire out of the air

Kill enough of these
Collect enough of those
That's the grind
That's the grind
And it keeps me focused, as I roam

The wind does what I ask now
The water rises when I need it
I burn a path through the bog
And I fill my hands with what they wanted
And I carry it all back
Up the rickety elevator to the mushroom cap
To the little city at the top

The first time the sporelings looked at me
Like I was nothing
Like I was anybody
But I came back again
And I came back again
And now they all smile when I walk in
Now they save me things behind the counter
Now they tell me where the good stuff is
Now they say sit down, stay awhile
And I listen, yes, I listen to them

Kill enough of these
Collect enough of those
That's the grind
That's the grind
And it keeps be busy, as I roam

They said the world needs saving
I didn't know they meant
One handful at a time
Carried up a mushroom stem
8My Elemental Friends
I've got a little fire
Who follows me around
She flickers when she's happy
And she crackles when she's proud
I've got a little water
Who rolls along beside
And every time the fire gets too close
He hisses and he hides

My elemental friends
My elemental friends
I called them out of nothing
And they won't go back again

The fire chases water
The water chases fire
They tumble through the campsite
Knocking over everything I own
The wind one just watches
Spinning in the corner
Like she thinks she's above it all
And honestly she might be

My elemental friends
My elemental friends
I called them out of nothing
And they won't go back again

The fire wants to help me
She burns a little brighter
Every time there's trouble
The water wants to fix things
He smooths out every mess
The wind just wants to wander
And she always comes back
Smelling like somewhere I've never been

And when I'm tired
And when the grind is long
They curl up close around me
Fire warm on one side
Water cool on the other
Wind humming overhead
And I'm not lonely
I'm not lonely out here
I'm never lonely anymore

My elemental friends
My elemental friends
I called them out of nothing
And they don't feel like nothing
They feel like home
9Sea Monster Rising
The water started churning
Where the water's never churned
And something came up from below
Bigger than I'd heard

A sea monster's tentacle
Whipping all around
A sea monster's tentacle
Tearing up the soggy ground

I hit it with everything I had
I burned it and I froze it
And it slipped back under
And I thought okay
I thought okay that's done

Uh oh, woah, oh, oh, oh

Another tentacle
(Another and another)
Another tentacle, woah oh
As soon as one goes down
Another rises from the water

I called the fire down
I called the water up
I turned the wind into a wall
And the marsh shook
And it wasn't enough

Another tentacle, slapping at the marsh
Another tentacle, whipping really harsh
I can't see the body
I can only see the arms

My fire friend is burning hot
Hotter than she's ever been
My water friend is spinning fast
Trying to hold back the tide
The wind is screaming overhead
And I'm starting to think
It won't be enough
Having the elements on my side

Another tentacle, slapping at the marsh
Another tentacle, whipping really harsh
I can't see the body
I can only see the arms

A sea monster's tentacles
Whipping all around
A sea monster's tentacles
Tearing up the soggy ground

Another tentacle
(Another and another)
Another tentacle, woah oh
As soon as one goes down
Another rises from the water

Another tentacle
(Another and another)
Another tentacle
Woah, oh, oh, oh oh
10Make the Winds Sing for Me
No more
No more
I didn't cross the dark between the stars
To drown in a swamp
This world is mine

Make the winds sing for me
Make the waters rise
Make the fire rain down from the sky
This battle will be mine

Lightning crashes, lava rushes
Elements play like instruments

I can feel the ground beneath me
Shaking as it remembers what it is
And who I am
I can feel the water listen
Really listen

And I'm not asking anymore
I'm not calling anymore
I'm telling the elements
What we're going to do
Directing them like a choir

Make the winds sing for me
Make the waters rise
Make the fire rain down from the sky
This battle will be mine

Lightning crashes, lava rushes
Elements play like instruments

The wind becomes a blade
The water becomes a fist
The fire fills the sky
And the ground holds me steady
While I conduct the whole symphony

And the tentacles are burning
And the tentacles are freezing
And the tentacles are breaking
And the water rushes back
To where it belongs

Make the winds sing for me
Make the waters rise
Make the fire rain down from the sky
This battle was mine

Lightning crashes, lava rushes
Elements play like instruments

This world is mine

The marsh goes quiet
The glow from the mushroom caps comes back
The spores start drifting again
Like ash in the sky
My little fire curls up on my shoulder
And flickers once
Like she's proud of me

Make the winds sing for me
Make the waters rise
I came from the deep
And I am not going back

This world is mine
11Wispin' Away
My bones go quiet
My hands go light
I'm not myself for a little while
And that's alright

Wispin' away
Wispin' away
Nothing but a glow
And I'm gone, I'm gone

I drift right through the marshes
I drift right through the trees
Nobody sees me coming
Nobody sees me leave
Just a flicker in the tall grass
Just a shimmer on the road
I'm half here and half nowhere
And nowhere feels like home

Wispin' away
Wispin' away
Nothing but a glow
And I'm gone, I'm gone

The world goes by so different
When you're floating through it quiet
The mushrooms blur like lanterns
The water's just a flash
I don't have hands to carry things
I don't have words to speak
I'm just a light without a lantern
And the light is all I need

Wispin' away
Wispin' away
Nothing but a glow
And I'm gone, I'm gone

Sometimes I drift for no reason
Sometimes I drift for hours
Past every place I've been
Past every fight I've won
And the wind doesn't have to sing for me
Out here the wind and I are the same thing

Wispin' away
Wispin' away
Nothing but a glow
And I'm gone, I'm gone
I'm gone, I'm gone
12Home is Where the Hearth Fire Burns
There's an inn in every city
And they all leave the light on
And the bed's not much
But the fire's warm
And nobody asks where I'm from anymore

Home is where the hearth fire burns
Home is where the hearth fire burns
I didn't start here
But I'm here now
I'm one of the heroes of this world

Sometimes I go back to the hill
Where the cathedral sits
Where the goat demons live
Where my people put down roots
In the wreck of everything that carried us
And it's home
It's always home

But there's an inn in every city
And they all leave the light on
A warm meal and a quiet room
And somebody saying
Welcome back, we saved your spot

Home is where the hearth fire burns
Home is where the hearth fire burns
And I can make fire anywhere
I'm one of the heroes of this world

I used to live inside a ship
Sailing through the dark
And the dark was all I knew
Now I know the mushroom glow
And the way the wind sounds
When it's singing just for me
And the fire in my hands
And the water at my feet

There's an inn in every city
In the mountains and the marshes
By the sea and in the snow
And every single one of them
Knows my name now
Knows my face now
Even the blue skin
Even the horns
Even the hooves on the stairs
They know me

I'm one of the heroes of this world

Home is where the hearth fire burns
Home is where the hearth fire burns
I came from the deep
I crashed on the hill
I didn't read the lore
I burned through the dark
I wisped across the fields
And every inn along the way
Left the light on

Home is where the hearth fire burns
And I can make fire anywhere
I didn't start here
But I'm here now
And here is home
